Right on. This is another topic where we have the same beliefs.

Here are two other things I’ve found useful:

(1) for team / project updates: have everyone who would be invited to a hypothetical meeting update a doc (or your tool of choice: Trello, etc.) beforehand, and read the updates in an async fashion. Then only the folks who have issues or questions can meet to discuss only those issues and update the rest of the crew async.

(2) Schedule recurring meetings for at most a quarter (90 days) at a time. They disappear after 90 days and someone has to start a new series, re-evaluating the meeting’s necessity and invitee list.
